The MS 212 is powered by STIHL's 2-MIX engine, which uses four-channel cylinder technology to deliver the fuel-and-air mixture more efficiently into the combustion chamber. The result is strong cutting performance with reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions, meeting the EU Stage V directive. The engine is low-maintenance by design and holds its performance well under sustained use.

Controls are kept simple throughout. The combi-lever requires only a single start position, and automatically resets to the operating position when the saw is switched off, so a warm engine can be restarted straight away without adjusting any controls. The stop button is conveniently positioned for quick shutdown.

The STIHL anti-vibration system uses buffer and spring elements to dampen engine and chain vibrations before they reach the handle, reducing strain on hands, arms, and joints during longer cutting sessions.

Both the fuel and oil tanks are transparent, giving a clear visual check of fluid levels at a glance. The tool-free bayonet cap allows quick, secure opening and closing of both tanks without the need for any additional equipment. The carburettor compensator maintains consistent engine behaviour over time as the air filter loads up, so maintenance can be carried out on a performance basis rather than a fixed schedule. Side-mounted chain tensioning allows for fast, protected re-tensioning and chain changes via the sprocket cover.
